Preparing for the Chinese New Year
Year of the Water Rabbit
A number of years back, I had some chucklehead hater that spent most of his waking life trying to create issues for me that I had to deal with. In one case, I reviewed a product online and he created a smear campaign stating that I had not purchased the product and was a liar…yada, yada. So now I always try to provide what proof I can to verify my purchases and that I did what I said I had done. You’ll find that all listed below and clicking on any image will enlarge it.
Chinese homophones1A homophone is a fancy word that refers to each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins, or spelling, for example new and knew. play a HUGE role in Chinese culture. In the West, we have unlucky numbers2When it comes to “unlucky” numbers in the West, it is mainly the number 13, but the Chinese really do take it to a whole new level. When it comes to lucky and unlucky3In Chinese, numbers are considered to be auspicious -吉利 – or jili and inauspicious – 不吉 – or buji., you best bet is to stay VERY far away from anything with the number 4 in it and try stick with the number 8.

What About Japanese?
Back when I had a home dojo and a handful of local students5For those that don’t know me, I have never had a “professional” dojo or for profit dojo…or a commercial dojo if you prefer. I generally taught out of my home or other local venue. A note to the instructors out there, when you don’t offer commercial services, you can fully control who you do and do not take as a student!, we had great success with having a Chinese New Year party at the dojo itself.
